A Strength-Based Approach To Asperger’s, Non-Verbal Learning Disorder, & High Functioning Autism: Practical, Creative Techniques & Possibilities

John M. Ortiz, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist

The purpose of this workshop is to review and experience a number of practical strategies that have proven effective in addressing some of the more typical concerns presented by children, adolescents and adults with Asperger’s Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, and High-Functioning Autism. A review of diagnostic similarities and differences, and primary underlying theories of causation, will begin the session. Afterward, participants will be encouraged to take part in various interactive, hands-on activities featuring creative techniques that have been proven effective in serving these populations. Case studies, accompanied by open discussion and group networking, will be used to further complement our understanding to, and raise awareness of, the notion of the “Asperger perspective.” Small and large group participation designed to maximize learning via experiential exercises will be encouraged. The workshop will be continually updated reflecting ongoing research and clinical findings involving these populations, and will draw from multi-therapeutic and multi-modal disciplines.

Asperger's Syndrome, Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities & High-Functioning Autism: Effective Interactive Strategies for Children, Adolescents, and Adults

John M. Ortiz, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist

This workshop will discuss the features and characteristics that help to define, and distinguish among, Asperger’s Syndrome, nonverbal learning disorder, and high-functioning autism. Participants will be introduced to practical, effective strategies for identifying and addressing many of the challenges encountered by children, adolescents and adults with these rapidly emerging conditions. Special challenges faced by each of these developmental groups will be reviewed. A number of clinically supported, research based techniques found helpful in serving these populations will be discussed. The program combines educational information, case studies, group activities, and multimedia presentations while highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Primary emphasis will be on strategies for assisting these populations as well as understanding their world perspective.

Neuro-Developmental Disorders: Unraveling the Tapestry

John M. Ortiz, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist

“Neurodiversity” is a concept that refers to the notion that everyone of us is “neurologically unique” and suggests that—much like ethnic, cultural, or other types of “diversity,”—each of us needs to be recognized, respected and celebrated as invaluable individuals. The general purpose of this workshop is to introduce and help to clarify a number of conditions—some well known, others less familiar—that continue to emerge as threads of the tapestry that underlies and defines all individuals. More specifically, we will explore how the above conditions relate to Asperger’s Syndrome, High-Functioning, and Non-verbal Learning Disability. Through lecture, multi-media, and interactive discussion, we will examine the differences and similarities between a number of rare and related conditions, secondary traits, emerging syndromes, and misleading labels in an effort to provide a clearer understanding of these challenging, and often confusing, patterns of neuro-developmental expression. The workshop will emphasize a strength-based approach and philosophy.
